I didn't know what tools I would actually need, so I just pulled everything we had out. I only ended up using a couple of these and stuck with only black clay instead of the two-tone look I was originally planning.
I sculpted the basic horse head shape and then pulled at the edges a little where I was going to cut away the flowing mane. I scored it with the wire brush tool. (In the top photo.)
I baked the horse at this stage following the Sculpey package directions. After it was baked and all cooled down, I used metallic paint to fill in the mane.
After the gold paint was dry, I used 3 coats of Sculpey gloss. There is no more baking at this stage- you just let the gloss dry completely and apply the next coat. Super easy!
I think this could be really cute as a wall hanging, too. Anyway, I hope this sparks a little want for weekend crafting! Happy Thursday, friends!
gorgeous! you are so creative.

ReplyDeleteI adore this! I think it will make a great nostalgic gift for my sister since she was crazy about horses when we were young. Thanks for a great, easy tutorial =)
ReplyDeleteThis is just so cute!
ReplyDeleteI love DIYs that look more expensive than they actually are! This is so cute and the possibilities are endless.. I'm tempted to make these in jungle, savannah, and farm themes :)
ReplyDeletewow this is so awesome! I never would have thought of making something so big with oven bake clay and the pretty metallic paint and clear gloss coat is great too!!!!
ReplyDeletewhat a cute idea! and executed so well!
ReplyDeleteI love this! I keep wanting to make one of my own for my keys (always losing them!) in a cool shape. I love the idea of the horse! Maybe I'll just have to do a cat. haha.

Cute! I am planning on doing something similar soon. Just gathering more inspiration :)
ReplyDeleteThis is just so perfect, Katie! I have a green horse ashtray that I bought as a gift for my mum from Urban Outfitters a few years ago. Because of where I live, I had to get it and a bunch of other items shipped to me. When I opened the box, and to my surprise, there were two ashtrays inside. Suffice it to say that I kept one for myself, and now use it for my jewellery as well. Yours reminds me of it. :-)
