I spotted this light grey crushed velvet on one of our various trips to the fabric store and decided it was too good not to buy. Initially I considered making a dress out of it, but how many velvet dresses can one girl own? I decided a maxi skirt was the way to, so I got to cutting.
I was planning to type out instructions for the skirt, but
this blog already has a really good tutorial. I'm sure there are a million other good/easy to understand ones out there too!
I hemmed the bottom initially, but this fabric looked a little too much like a curtain with the hem. I cut out the hem and just left the bottom edge raw.
I can't remember if I've shared this before, but I actually have a REALLY hard time with the texture of velvet. I've spent the last several years "powering through" and I'm getting better (meaning I don't gag at the touch of it) but it's still a little bit of a stretch for me. It's so beautiful, it will be worth it in the end!

Omg I am the same with velvet, I cannot touch it without feeling horrible and having to touch something smooth afterwards until the 'velvet feeling' disappears.

ReplyDeleteThat's gorgeous and a great starter fabric because there's no frey so you don't have to mess with a lot of seam finish work. I've never seen silver before. It truly is pretty.

ReplyDeleteMy daughter has a really hard time with fabric textures! Winter coats are the worst....the way it sounds when it rubs against itself. I compare it to some people's reaction to fingernails down a chalk board. It really REALLY bothers her. :)

That skirt is so lovely - I love the way that it looks on you! But, I have to admit, I am the same exact way about velvet - the texture just gets to me. I think it was because my color guard uniform in high school was velvety and it just got to me.

I'm weird about velvet too, especially crushed velvet! It reads a little Stevie Nicks / hippy goth for me most of the time. But there are variations of it, especially silk velvet, that I do love!
