Home School Diaries

This is actually from earlier in our school year.  We've learned over the past couple of years that Hope is a hands-on kind of learner.  The more projects and experiments we do, the more excited she becomes and the easier it is for her to really remember the information.  It was a Saturday when she came over to me and said, "I can't wait until school on Monday!"  I (of course) looked at her a little dumbfounded.  She then explained the process of growing mold and how Monday was when she got to pull the various foods out to see what had sprouted.  I just remember thinking < Holy cow.  This is working.  She likes learning. >

You can see my other Home School Diaries here.

  1. I was an elementary education major for three years (I just switched to art ed) and I loved coming up with little hands on projects for kids. Sadly the reason I switched is because I started to realize how hard that would be to actually implement in the school system these days (there are seriously so many reasons why). I think that is why I switched to art education.
With all that said, I love the fact that you homeschool your children and that you give them lots of hands on projects to work on. Kids need that and will always learn better that way.

  2. As a previously homeschooled child and now a teacher, that is one of THE most exciting and rewarding things you can hear! SO rewarding. =)

  5. May I just say how very happy it made me to hear that you homeschool. We recently made the decision to homeschool our daughter and sometimes it feels scary. I worry that I'll have no-one to talk to about it.
Discovering your blog has been wonderful. It's such a great mix of everything. Thank you! x

    1. It does feel scary-- I can totally relate! We are finally getting to a place where we mostly know what works and what doesn't, but this is our 3rd year.

    1. Ditto! Am I correct in thinking that you guys recently moved? I'm really curious how homeschool and moving works...it just seems so overwhelming. With that said, I love these glimpses into your homeschooling because it really seems like you're putting your all in and it will pay off for your girls. :)

  7. Did you really grow molds out of those food in the ziplock bags? And how do you schedule Hope's lessons? I'm really curious about the dynamics of home school as in our country, it isn't very common.

  15. How sweet. I was homeschooled my whole entire school life and I loved the hands on projects that my mom would do with us when we were younger. One time, when we studied about Australia, we made crafts that were about kangaroos or made recipes from over there. It made learning about other countries and time periods fun. Best of luck with all the rest of your homeschooling adventures :)

  19. What a smart girl!

This is so nostalgic. I read in your Why We Home School post that you used Sonlight. I was home schooled through every grade and we did Sonlight in my high school years. I got to collage and it turned out my roommate did too!

But hands-on learning is the best. :-)

  27. What book are you guys using for Science? We're currently using Scott Foresman for my 7&8yo home schoolers, and although it's good, it is becoming a bit monotonous, my boys are definitely hands on learners as well.

  28. How exciting! I've had a few home schooled friends growing up and I was always sort of envious. I had a hard time through school since they never focused on the hands-on learning style so this is a life I've always considered for my children. I'd love to hear about how you got started and what you should know about it, ect. ect. :)

  31. I like you more and more when I read your blog! I always think you have an adorable family, lots of style and talent.
I was home schooled all the way through high school and I think it was the best choice my parents made for me. I've only been married 4 months, so there's no kids yet, but I like to think we'll go the home school route as well.

  32. I've only been homeschooling since December (although it's something I considered doing for a long time) and it's so great when I see things "click" for my little guy. I love being able to teach him in a way that works best with his learning style.
I hope we get to see more homeschool diaries!

  33. that's so awesome! i was home schooled with my sister by our mom from kindergarten through 6th grade and i loved it. i'm glad Hope is loving it and learning a lot!

  34. I was homeschooled for my entire education up through graduating highschool. If my mom had not done so, we never would have gotten to see my dad because of his job. It is such an encouragement to see other families blooming in home education. I plan on keeping my kids at home to do the same when I become a mother. Keep up the amazing work Katie! You are such an inspiration!
