Snapshots

When I was younger, I was so in love with photography.  I carried my camera everywhere and snapped pictures of everything.  It's what I did and who I was.

At some point, I stopped taking my camera everywhere, stopped snapping pictures of everything, and lost the excitement.  It happened so slowly, over such a long period of time, that I didn't even notice.  We'd go somewhere and I'd forget the camera, or I had the big/heavy lens on and didn't feel like lugging it around... that sort of thing.

I want camera magic again.  I'm not talking about amazing photos or elaborate photo shoots, I just want to capture everyday life on more than an iPhone.

I went out tonight and bought myself a bigger purse so that my camera can come everywhere with me.  To hold me accountable, "snapshots" will be a new series on my blog.  I'm pretty excited to fall back in love with snapping pictures... oh, and having so many more tangible memories is a total bonus.

  1. Awesome! I always have a camera with me, though I have a tendency to use my phone instead...

  2. This is a great idea. Too often I settle for using my phone for the exact same reasons.

    Good luck with your snapshots!

  3. Great! Can't wait to see the series. Also,I never have a phone with me (I don't own a cellphone...yep,you read that right!) but I use a point&shoot to take my photos. Have a great Friday! :)

  4. Great idea! I thought about making a weekly snapshots post on my blog. I do something for Instagram every Monday, but it's the same for me... I just leave my camera behind. I'm starting on Monday! I'm glad you're doing this, too!

Good luck! I can't wait to see what you take pictures of!

  5. The same thing happened to me. And I just don't know where the magic went... and it makes me sad. I hope you get your camera magic back! :)

  6. That is such a good idea. I will now be looking for the perfect camera bag/purse. I bet you will get the camera magic back it is not hard to fall in love with photography.

  7. Random question, but your husband's shoes- are they TOMS by chance? Or something else? They looks like something my (very picky, difficult to shop for) husband would wear.

I'm 18 and I hope I won't get tired of photography either, because right now it's a big part of my life!

  9. Your photos are lovely. I started feeling the same way quite a while ago, so I started carrying my old Canon Snappy 35mm around everywhere. It's smaller than my DSLR, and I'm forced not to over-think my shots, so I can still live in the moment. I love the look of film, and those photos have become so precious to me. Good luck with your new feature!

  10. yah! i love this! i've only had my smart phone for a little over a week, and i can already see why people stop carrying their nice cameras everywhere! i've hardly picked mine up at all. :/

  11. I was so in love with photography when I was little too. I love the iPhone and all the camera apps available, but there's nothing like a "real" photo :)

  12. While I use my dslr for planned photos around my home/studio, I never leave home without my Canon Powershot. It's a small camera, tiny enough to stick in my cute little purses, but really does take amazing pictures. Sometimes I can't tell the difference between shots taken with it and pictures taken with my dslr. Good that you bought the big purse for your dslr, but if you ever find yourself going back to feeling it's just too heavy to tote around, I recommend the Powershot. Either way, can't wait to see your snaps!

    1. I love this suggestion. It's true, point & shoots get a bad reputation sometimes, but they are great to have around! We always take ours to the beach with us, and those are some of my absolute favorite pictures! Thanks for the reminder. :)

  13. In my early teen years I always had my camera, whenever I went out I would bring it along. Snap lots of photos but as I've grown up and have become busier it has been something that has slipped away. Recently I decided I wanted to get back into it. I want to capture the moments and look back at them and remember the feeling. Looking forward to seeing more of your snapshots.

  14. I love snapshots. I have a horrible memory so taken photos really helps me with the little stuff. I really need to start carrying my camera around with me instead of just my phone.

  15. i love this new series! just because you are doing this, it will help me to remember to bring along a camera and do the same!

  16. I was always into photography but was always too afraid to buy a professional camera to spend all that money and then not use it. My sweet boyfriend knew this and decided to get me one this past Christmas. I'm guilty of not using it as much as I would like to for the same exact reasons! Thanks for the motivation!!

  18. I love photography and snapping pics of everyday life -- there are so many things that I wish I had documented. SImilar to you, I find myself making excuses about not wanting to lug it around or have it around my neck. I may have to just buy another purse like you so I can't make any excuses!

  22. I'm excited to see your snapshots! I'm glad you'll be carrying your camera everywhere with you; I think it's so much fun! I carry such a big purse, because I always need room for my DSLR camera, a book, and my knitting (not to mention all those other things that normal people carry in their purses, like my wallet and phone!).
    Have fun!

  23. I feel like when I got my DSLR, I started shunning point and shoots. But the truth is that I secretly love my point and shoot. It takes (relatively) high quality photos and is still small enough to fit in any pocket or purse. Because I never wanted to carry my DSLR around, I just have almost no photos from the last few months. I never want to be so snobby again!

  31. i know that feeling. one way i've gotten the spark back is by playing with film again. you should try fiddling around with 35mm film. it's super easy and makes snapping photos even more rewarding and surprising when they get developed :) looking forward to you new feature! xoxo

    1. I actually tried this recently. I shot a whole roll of film, was so excited to get it developed, and there ended up being a bad light leak in my camera and all of the pictures were ruined. Since then I've been a little wary of film. I know it's not always like that, I just lost a lot of precious moments that time and it's made me skiddish. <3

  32. Yay! Getting back into photography is always a good thing. Capturing those everyday moments is so important. I definitely have Instagram and my iPhone to thank for the fact that I've captured a lot more memories in the last year than I would have with my DSLR alone.

  33. I'm so glad for youuu!! Finding the lost magic is something all we should do :D
